Charlie Barker

Charlie Barker is a young and talented singer songwriter who performs a wide variety of American influenced acoustic music.  She came to our attention following her appearance at the Wickersley Young Acoustic Roots Competition back in March 2005. We recorded her debut album ‘Sleeping at the Station’ the same year and it portrays Charlie with her music just on guitar complete with some tasteful cello arrangements.

Over the years, Charlie has been inspired by American folk and country artists such as Nanci Griffith, The Dixie Chicks, Janis Ian and Alison Krauss. She can be seen regularly performing in many of the acoustic venues and folk clubs in her native South Yorkshire/ Derbyshire area. She has appeared at the
Royal Festival Hall, London, in the National Festival of Music for Youth, on BBC local radio and she also played at the Radio 2 Young Folk Award semi finals back in the autumn of 2005.  Festivals have ranged from Wath, Filey, Rockinbeerfest and Worksop to Ely and Henley where on both occasions she was rebooked for the following year.  She is also attracting attention on the corporate circuit.

"Ely Festival produced a jewel this year in Charlie Barker. It was my first time seeing Charlie but not my last. Lovely voice, superb delivery, totally engaging, beautiful stage manners and of course that indefinable something that makes her audience want to listen to her songs. A rare gift indeed. The next house-hold name on the folk scene? Charlie Barker, no doubt about that!" - Anthony John Clarke, Musician

"Her intrinsic purity of tone and expression betrays shades of Alison Krauss and Nanci Griffith. Charlie's treatment of the ubiquitous 'Fields of Gold' gives Eva Cassidy a run for her money."
-
Stirrings Magazine

"A seasoned performer of gratifying modesty and integrity, who creates arrangements which speak for themselves. ‘Sleeping at the Station’ plays like a gift to the listener."
- Music Maker
