ROOTS 2008 REPORT

A full house at the
Phoenix Theatre in Bawtry saw Rotherham duo Patrick
Young and Catherine Binden voted winners in the Young Acoustic Roots
competition on Saturday March 1st.
Drawing musicians in from around the UK,
the other finalists were Izzy and Anna from The Hope Valley; Tom Moore and
Archie Churchill-Moss from Norfolk and Somerset respectively and Lancashire band 4Square who were voted runners-up.
The music ranged from traditional standards, renditions of favourites
from the Beatles to The Dixiechicks; modern interpretation of morris tunes; world
music and original songs.
This was
possibly the best final in the competitions four year history and the judges
were hard pressed to make a decision because of the high standard. Nevertheless, promoter Pete
Thornton-Smith; Cleethorpes Festival organiser Mary White and
local musician Dave Mallinson from The Music Room reflected on the four acts
before making their decision.
All
finalists went away with prizes courtesy of the sponsors and Patrick and
Catherine look forward to playing main stage at Cleethorpes Folk Festival this
May Bank Holiday weekend. The evening
also featured two sets from legendary singer songwriter Jez Lowe who quite
rightly declared all the performers to be winners.
Next years event is planned for March 7th
and for further information on this free competition then contact Pete on 01709

"Thanks for the opportunity to perform at your venue. It is most important that our generation is encouraged to play folk music to keep the tradition alive for the future" Tom Moore - finalist.
