Roger Davies
“That lad has absolutely everything. I
couldn’t teach him anything. He is the
best I’ve seen in twenty years. If I had
a torch I’d throw it to him.” Harvey
Andrews
Roger has been gaining
much attention on the folk scene these past couple of years thanks to Pete and Chris
Thornton-Smith from The BPAS Group. It
started with a support spot for Roger back in March 2007 at a concert that
prompted those quotes form Harvey Andrews.
Appearances at Filey, Rotherham and Handley Festivals and a coveted slot on
main stage at Towersey Village Festival were soon forthcoming. Holmfirth, Shepley, Crawley, Pickering and Wath Festivals came his way in
2008 together with numerous private and corporate appearances. In Folk Clubs and theatres the ‘House Full’
signs are not uncommon.
The Marsden Jazz
Festival gave him the opportunity in 2007 to appear as a special guest of the
well known national poet Simon Armitage, a partnership that was repeated in
2008. His second album ‘Northern Trash’
was released in April 2007 and was favourably reviewed in issue 77 of
Living Tradition. October 2009 saw his third release "The Busker" hit the streets.
"Sometimes,
simplicity is the key. Sometimes, an acoustic guitar and a voice is enough, if
you've got little things called songs.” John Murphy (MusicOHM.com)
"There
is something quite lovely about this album, in its good old fashioned English
singer-songwriter demeanour - each song strong, self-contained, melodic and
honed by stagecraft into 12 pieces that never outstay their welcome." Christine Miller (AdultContemporary.com)
"There is a potentially huge talent emerging in our midst -
Roger Davies. His new songs tell of life
in Huddersfield, amongst other things, and are
all delivered with extraordinary, understated humour and delightful turns of
phrase.” Joe Grint (Tykes News, Summer 2007)
